WHAT IS SPORTS MASSAGE?

Sports massage is a form of massage that involves the physical manipulation of soft tissue to benefit a persons physical performance and wellbeing. It uses a wide variety of techniques, some softer, some intermediate and some firmer depending on what the client needs. It’s especially used by those who are engaged in regular physical activity or have chronic postural problems.

Sports massage is designed to assist in easing problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma.

These traumas can also be caused by muscular imbalances and postural problems from normal daily activities. The application of sports massage, prior to and after exercise, may enhance performance, aid recovery and can certainly prevent injuries.

a Sports massage is specifically tailored to different sports and sporting injuries. It is not a relaxing form of massage and can often be quite strenuous. It works by releasing tension and can incorporate stretching tight muscles, stimulating inactive muscles and improving the condition of the soft tissues.

You will most likely feel a bit washed out, relaxed and less stressed directly afterwards. It’s great for improving, flexibility, mobility, releasing annoying tension and generally feeling looser and more comfortable in your body.

WHERE DID MASSAGE COME FROM?

Massage is recorded as one of the earliest forms of physical therapy and was used over 3000 years ago in many places such as China, India and Greece. Its popular use in the Western world is largely due to the work of Per Henrik Ling (1776 – 1839), who developed a form of massage, now known as Swedish massage. Ling developed his own style of massage and exercise to help fencers and gymnasts, gaining international recognition in the process.

Many of his ideas have formed the foundations of modern sports massage. Today, there are many forms of massage available to assist us in maintaining our health and wellbeing. Sports massage has been accepted in America, Canada and Australia for many years now, while in the UK, the practice only became known and more widely used in the 1990s.
