FIT3D Body Scanning Available 

In order to know if you are losing body fat rather than your muscle weight when dieting, you ideally need to use more than your bathroom scales to measure your results.

Scales don’t provide your actual body composition (muscle, fat, water, bone etc…), only your total body weight, hopefully being lost, which can fluctuate greatly for many reasons, so using scales can really mess with your mind and actually demotivate you, even if you are actually getting good results. 

A common example of this, is initially gaining some muscle, whilst simultaneously losing body fat, meaning that your bodyweight could temporarily maintain for a short period of time. 

If you don’t know that muscle has been gained whilst the fat has come off, then you may feel disheartened by no weight loss immediately showing on the scales and then you may feel like giving up as a result. Or you may create a negative association with resistance training, in order to get a short term dopamine buzz of “weight loss”. 

PLAY THE LONG GAME

Your body won’t keep gaining muscle, like it does initially, so just maintaining consistency and pushing through what seems like a plateau, will then provide the loss on the scales. It’s the mind that controls the body to keep going though, so getting accurate information on your body composition (muscles and fat ratio’s) is very important for motivation. Some peoples more than others. You know who you are…

In this example, even if the bodyweight stayed the same, but you saw your fat has come down and muscle has gone up, by a relative amount, then that can motivate you to do more of the right things, instead of sabotaging and throwing a wobbly.

Mark Bone is the Managing Director of Phoenix Gym Norwich and has been a Master level personal trainer and sports therapist since 1998. Mark has an extensive background and experience in all aspects of personal training and lifestyle coaching, from fat loss, general health improvement, motivation, strength and conditioning with professional athletes and currently specialises in corrective exercise.

Mark has written articles for magazines, assisted Channel 4 for a short weight loss series, done interviews for Norwich Radio (and most local and some national new outlets including the BBC) and taught weight loss programmes.
